I’ve been hoping to feature this build for a while. Ben from Team Cobalt has been painstakingly amassing parts over the last few months and waiting for just the right receiver set to become available…
“I looked at the parts which CAG/Delta have been seen using on builds since around 2009 and selected the parts I preferred and was most comfortable with. Obviously there may be some parts which probably aren’t used by them (e.g. the ASAP plate) but I switch shoulders a lot while playing so that one made the most sense for me. I wanted all the parts on my front end to be as low profile as possible and avoid overhanging torches, grips etc. I looked at some of the more low profile CAG set ups and went with that style.”
“In terms of optics, I’ve always had a soft spot for Eotechs so I had to go with one. For illumination I went with the surefire M600 Scoutlight, mounted on an S&S Precision mount. However, the M600 replaced an M952V, so I lost my IR illuminator option with that change. So, I decided to buy a KM2 head (currently on the way) for the M600 – just so I had that option again, if I ever need IR illumination at night as well as white light.”
“Until I have an Insight ATPIAL I went with the next best thing which is the Invisible Sight ATPIAL(AN/PEQ-15) which has all the options the real thing, just at a lower power; an LED based IR Illuminator instead of focus-able laser and of course no where near the same build standard. To operate both light and PEQ I went with Night Evolution’s replica of the Surefire SR-D-IT Dual switch, as it can be used with RS Surefire lights and replica PEQs.”
“I reverse mounted the forward BUIS to save rail space for any future additions to the top rail. This can be seen in a number of In The Wild pics, like the one below.”
“Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find a genuine KAC forward Taupe sight, so I went with the G&P replica for now. For the rear sight I went with the KAC 600M Micro BUIS.”
“As for the Hogue overmoulded pistol grip, it is, in all honesty, one grip to rule them all.
I did have a CTR stock on there at first, but as I like a good cheek weld while keeping the stock relatively slim in profile, I went with the LMT SOPMOD stock. I can store spare batteries for my electronics such as torches, lasers, strobes, NVGs etc.”
“The paint job was inspired by this gentleman’s Rifle. The same as many other CAG inspired rifles, which have a similar paint job:”
“For me, the future is to replace the ACM Eotech 551 with a genuine EXPS 3-0, a genuine LaRue LT101 riser will replace the Element LT110, and the converted VFC GBBR upper receiver will be replaced with Suzutomo’s forthcoming HK416 upper.”
