Many have speculated that CAG’s contract with H&K on their HK416D rifles is coming to a close. This of course means one of two things is going to happen in the near future: 1. they will renew the current contract; or, 2. they will choose something new. Now we all know the Tier 1, tip of the spear, bottomless budget guys are going to want the latest and greatest. The real question is, what is the latest and greatest?
There have been rumblings in the firearms industry that CAG put out a solicitation for their new rifle and it has already received submissions. Companies like Geissele, H&K, Sig Sauer, and Knights Armament are all among the list of names that people think CAG will choose. Of course, with solicitations like this they’ll get sample guns from all of the companies who submit; in order to test and evaluate (T&E) them.
Testing and Evaluation is key for any element choosing something new, and especially so for a Tier 1 operator choosing a new primary weapon. It’s like a Samurai commissioning a master blacksmith to forge him only his finest blade. The weapon is an extension of them. Whatever it is needs to run hard, be reliable, and of course be precise.
So far, only rumors have spread on social media. Some have said the 416A5 was currently in the lead to be chosen. Others claim Sig has it in the bag, given all the contracts they’ve recently won. The more misguided have suggested the LVAW in 300BLK would replace the 416D…
Now though, we appear to have a picture of one of the T&E guns on a PSD operation with US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo. The two guns depicted are assessed to be one of the known contenders in CAG’s replacement venture: the Knights Armament CQB Mod 2 E3 SR16.
The KAC guns come with an 11.5″ barrel and custom length gas system that Knights has worked hard to perfect. They feature their special bolt with rounded lugs and lobster tail extractor. The entire BCG has a fancy new proprietary coating we also got pictures of, off a forum discussing KAC guns.
It’s also obvious they come Cerakoted from KAC in what looks like FDE. CAG obviously has a thing for tan guns, right? The operator on the left seems to be running a Sig Romeo4T optic on his rifle along with a black Magpul CTR stock and FDE Magpul MOE-K2 grip. The opposite man is running a G33 magnifier and what appears to be an Aimpoint micro. Both men seem to be running surefire suppressors and NGALs.
